I have a mexican restaraunt that im getting oil from.. I have had bad luck trying to filter the grease. When i go to pick it up it always has a thick film of foam sludge on top. Should i just drop that source and try to get a cleaner supply or what?? suggestions please

What do you attribute the foam to? Is the oil old - has it been sitting in a dumpster for months? Are they cleaning their vats with detergent and flushing it into the same container as the oil?

I have a barrel placed at the restaurant that they pour all their oil into. Inside it has a cone made of wire mesh, and on top of that I put a liner made of old torn up bed sheets (free from local hotels). They pour the oil into the cone and all the oil drips through the cloth into the bottom of the barrel. All the gunk stays in the liner, which I replace after several uses. I pull the prefiltered oil through a ball valve at the bottom of the barrel into my jugs.

Using this system I get nice, clear-looking oil. It still has to be filtered and dewatered, but I don't get any visible contaminants. You might try it or something similar.

Sounds like there are grill scrapings and the cleanser that they use being dumped into the container. I had one source that they would only dump into a 5 gallon pickle bucket. Thats when I found out that everthing that they cleaned was being dumped. Did not miss that source.

I think they dont reuse any grease and use no detergent i think they just use it then dump it.

cur.bill seems to be on to the most likely reason. Maybe ask them if they are putting grill scrapings into the oil. If they are, then ask if they can separate it out. Maybe you could even offer to dispose of the grill scrapings for them as a way to keep their good oil. All you have to do us dump them into a dumpster that gets pumped by bio-D producers, as they can use the grill scrapings in their process.
